Work life and home life – two different contexts
Core values that underpin company cultures were once “ring fenced” by physical sites, operations and neighboring communities. We partitioned our lives – work and home life had different contexts. We’re now more aware of the interconnectedness of human activity and planetary health, but businesses often find it difficult to integrate the two. Partnerships have proven to be a viable strategy to bridge the gap.
Food for thought and sustainability
Tesco, one of the largest UK supermarket chains, has partnered with the World Wildlife Federation to break down the fences. Why?
“…we’re destroying forests, choking the oceans with plastic, decimating wildlife and causing devastating changes to our climate. And it’s the demand for food that poses one of the biggest dangers to our planet,” said WWF UK CEO Tanya Steele.
Their activities focus on three key areas:
- Helping customers eat more sustainable diets
- Restoring nature in food production
- Eliminating food and packaging waste from the sector
Tesco’s strategy is outlined in their Sustainability Report, Every Little Help. As Dave Lewis, CEO, says,
…we want to go further to achieve our goal of providing customers with affordable, healthy, sustainable food,” Lewis said. “Partnering with WWF will help us … to reduce the environmental impact of the average shopping basket by half. By working with farmers, suppliers, colleagues and other experts, we hope to develop innovative solutions so shoppers can put affordable, tasty food on their plates today, confident they are not compromising the future of food for generations to come.”
The advantages of having sustainability partners include access to sustainability expertise, technical resources, and outside perspectives. There are some essential points to research if you’re in the process of identifying partnership candidates. Culture match, mission compatibility, industry experience and geographic footprint are just some considerations.
